AC Compressor install-2010 Equinox

The compressor wont engage. I pulled the wires off the compressor. One had continuity to ground (I'm assuming this is ground) the other had 14v when I turned on the ac controls , and went to zero when I turned the ac controls off. Seems pretty straight forward. Its getting voltage when you turn the switch on. The compressor clutch isn't engaging , its bad.

Am I correct in this assumption? No other testing of parts required?
Just a FYI, the pressures are about equal on hi and lo in this situation. Since I can't get the compressor to come on I stopped there.
I do a/c work so have all the specialized equipment. Evacuation pump, vacum pump, micron gage etc.

What I'm looking for are instructions are to how to replace the compressor. I can't seem to find any other posts where someones done it posted instructions or picts. I've found other posts here that helped for example when I had to replace the exhaust manifold and wheel bearings, but none for the compressor.

Can anybody point me to what I need or let me know how to proceed. I haven't looked at the engine compartment too hard yet, thought I'd see what I found here first. I'm not sure weather I should be jacking the car up and working from below or to take the top half apart. This site has been a great help in the past. I never could have gotten that exhaust manifold on without it.

Thanks.
Tommy

You say the clutch isn't engaging.
Are you talking about the outer hub where the belt rides?
Or the center of the clutch that turns the compressor inner shaft.

**** yall are fast.
Yeah, I guess I could give a little more info.
4 cylinder.
The center of the compressor isn't engaging. The pulley where the belt rides is spinning.
Thanks

With engine off, key off, and belt on try to spin the inner comp shaft with your fingers.
If the inner shaft will not move you need a new compressor with a new clutch.
If the inner portion of the clutch spins you may get buy with just a new clutch.

Much less expensive.
You make the call due to age of vehicle, mileage and cost.

Re: AC Compressor install-2010 Equinox

I did not know you could just replace the clutch. I'll test it out tonight. Does the compressor need to be pulled to replace the clutch? I'll see what I can find about just clutch replacement in the mean time.
Thanks.

No if you can get to the front of the compressor easily you can leave it on the engine and no discharge.
The hardest part is a couple of snap rings.

The compressor is 1 nut and two bolts after the belt, A/C line and electrical plug in.
You will need to pay attention to the amount of oil in the new compressor/system if you go new comp.
GM says drop out the bottom for the 4cyl, you might have enough room through the top I don't have a 4 cyl to tell.
The bottom is necessary for the V-6.

Make your decision and I'll shoot you some specs.

Re: AC Compressor install-2010 Equinox

my equinox is a 2012 fwd..I had to move the compressor to get the alternator out. it will move a lot and maybe that's all you need to get in there.
there were 3 bolts on the compressor I had to remove. I did not open up the system so I cant say how to evacuate it or charge it.

just one note.....if the refrigerant is low the compressor wont run but you did say there was 12v at the compressor ?
there is a low pressure cutout.

Re: AC Compressor install-2010 Equinox

Yes, I've got voltage going to the compressor so I'm assuming all safety switches aren't activated.

Re: AC Compressor install-2010 Equinox

If the low pressure switch is bad the clutch won't engage. This happened on my S10. I think the switch is located on one of the lines going into the compressor.
