2018 Equinox Shortcomings IMO

Picked up a 2018 Equinox LT with the Confidence/Convenience Package a few weeks ago. Summit white, black interior, 1.5 engine. I like the way it handles and drives, but there are a few things which I don't care for or understand why they were or were not included.

1) In this very competitive class of vehicle (CRV/RAV4/etc) the rear cargo space is a big issue. On the Equinox when the rear seat is folded forward to have a flat cargo area there are clips which stick out of the sides of the vehicle. These clips are what the seats sit in to hold them in place. The one on the passenger side is especially in the way when trying to load the area with stacked boxes, etc. It sticks out 3 inches on both the drivers and passenger sides.

2) Every GM vehicle I have owned with a rear camera has had sound (beeps) which can be heard when backing up and you get too close to an object. This Equinox emits 3 very soft beeps and then no more. The volume can not be adjusted, nor can it be set up to provide the continued beeps as other GM or even other brand vehicles. Yes, this car does have the rear park assist and the side radar back-up to notify if something is coming from the sides while backing up. Pretty much a step backwards eliminating the beeps in my opinion.

3) The keyless ignition is a nice feature which I have had on other brand vehicles. On the Equinox, I have been able to choose a setting so there is no chime or warning when I leave the FOB in the car, such as when parked in the locked garage. However, when I open the door to get in, chimes and a warning on the IP come on saying that the keys are in the vehicle! Of course there is no need to be reminded when getting into the car that the key fob is there since I left it there the night before! No way to shut off that warning message or chimes, yet I can do so in order to leave the fob in the car.

4) The fuel gauge when the tank is full only registers a little over the 7/8 mark, leaving the needle looking like there is not a full tank. I will be checking with the dealership regarding this but don't know if they can really do anything about it. Yes, I have filled the tank twice and kept putting fuel in until it would take no more.

5) Other cars can read and show text messages while driving. Turned in a 2015 Traverse which had this feature and it was truly a hands free process other than touching the screen to view or listen to the message. This one needs a phone plugged into the USB port and the Android Auto app turned on in order to read messages and reply to them. It also doesn't show the phone address book other than starting with the letter A or having to search the address book by touching different letters on the screen of the car.

6) No voice controls for phone, text, climate control, radio or other functions which provided for hands free operations in the Traverse and my other vehicles. Partial voice when the phone is plugged in to the one and only USB port up front to connect to Android Auto.

I am glad I picked up the Equinox, but am also glad it is only a 24 month lease. The rebates, incentives, and other discounts even on the 2018 already made it hard to pass up. Just really kind of surprissed how GM has gone backwards with some of their options and features on this newest model.

I've owned a 2014 Nox which had no lines on the backup camera or no tone. I now own a 2016 Nox which, thankfully, brought back the lines on the backup camera screen but NO TONES as far as I can tell. I'm wondering if the "tones" were ever a feature on the Equinox or whether I'm missing some setting as I've never heard a backup warning tone and would really be happy if there was one and I've just missed it.

Not sure about the previous Equinox model years. I had the Traverse, Ford Edge and Ford C-Max, and Buick Rendezvous which all had the beep. If they have the 3 very faint sounding beeps in this 2018 model, why not make it so it is actually useful? Once those 3 beeps have sounded they don't come back until the next time you reverse the car. Believe me when I say they are very faint, to the point of hardly being able to hear them at all if the radio is on, passengers are talking, etc.

The lines are still on the 2018 model, but the camera resolution is pretty grainy and the lines really don't correspond with the outer edges of the vehicle. Again, not sure how previous model Equinox were equipped, but compared to the Traverse and other GM's I've driven, and even the Ford's, this is pretty low tech for having an MSRP of $29590.00

973800 >>> what do you think of the 2018's stop-start system?

Thank you.

Actually, I kind of like it. It is pretty non-invasive so to speak meaning you really don't notice it much at all when it shuts off or restarts. I had previously driven a Ford C-Max plug in hybrid Energi model which would switch between engine and battery driven, and the Equinox reminds me of that (in a good way.)

We also have a 2017 Toyota Highlander Limited which has the Stop/Start feature, and it is pretty primitive compared to the Equinox. The first several times the Highlander restarted after shutting off at a traffic light, both my wife and I thought we had been tapped in the rear by another car! Seeing nothing behind us, the next time it happened I thought the transmission was slipping! No, just a pretty poor integration of the restarting system.

The Toyota does allow the system to be shut off to prevent the Start/Stop function, but must be turned off each time the car is started. In other words, I can't turn it off permanently, just each time I first start the car. If Chevrolet allowed the same action, I would turn it off on the Equinox also only because of what I believe is extra wear and tear.

I personally don't think the system really saves any fuel when you consider the extra starting/starting, the wear and tear on the starter and battery, and the wear and tear on the engine.

Re: 2018 Equinox Shortcomings IMO

My 2014 Nox had the backup alerts you speak of, and only fixed grid lines on the camera. My 2017 does have the grid lines that move and show you approximately where you are going, but no back up alerts. I very specifically got a 2017 Nox that didn't have the rear-safety package. I really go sick of that thing screaming at me every single morning backing out of the garage. On the other hand, I do know it has it's place and uses. 3 soft beeps seems like something is broken.

What model was your 2014. I ask because mine was a LT2 and had no lines or alert beeps. My 2016 LTZ has the lines but still no beeps.

Re: 2018 Equinox Shortcomings IMO

I will be checking with the dealer in the next week or so regarding the 3 soft beeps and the annoying load chime and IP reminder notice that the key was left in the car. The action is similar to that of cars when a key is left in the ignition and the door was opened.

Why they designed the user select options to include not giving an alarm when leaving the car with the key fob in it (which I have enabled), but no way to turn off a chime when returning to the car with the fob in it I don't understand.

2014 LTZ. The beeps were part of one of the safety packages. I think it was part of the lane departure system.

I'm questioning now if I really had the lines. I had a few rental cars and I'm mixing memories. I think I was wrong and there were no lines at all, but I had a "warning triangle" on the location of a potential of collision.
