2012 Terrain - P0014 previously fixed, now P0010

Hey everyone,

Thanks in advance for the help.

I purchased my Terrain new in December 2011. In June 2015, I had the common P0014 and the dealer serviced it under warranty. They replaced the timing chain, camshaft actuator, and timing chain tensioner. At the time of this repair I had 60k miles on it. In May 2016, I was having a "rattle" similar to the timing chain the first time around and also a "Service Stabilitrak" light so they ran an oil consumption test. They determined it was not burning any oil (but I still think it is) and cleared the Stabilitrak light which I've only seen again a few times since then.

Anyway, last night (Dec 29) I had a check engine light come on with code P0010. This is also a camshaft actuator and it did feel like it was running rough when I was reversing slowly. I have not checked the oil, but I had a full synthetic oil change professionally done (not at the dealer) on October 13th about 2200 miles ago. So I swung by the dealer and asked if this is something they would cover because the Powertrain warranty just expired a few weeks ago and they had done warranty work which seems to have been related already. I currently have about 75.5K miles on it. The dealer said they would have to do a full diagnosis (about $140) before they would be able to figure out if it's something they would even ask for a good faith warranty on. I made an appointment for next week.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is the P0010 related to the P0014 that I had earlier? Is this covered by the extended warranty. I did search the forum, but I could locate anyone who had a similar experience with both of these codes. Please feel free to link me to the post if there is an existing one.

Thanks!

Kris

Re: 2012 Terrain - P0014 previously fixed, now P0010

Update-

I checked the oil level and the dipstick is bone dry. Just over 2000 miles since last oil change with 5+ quarts of full synthetic. I added 2 quarts of syn blend and it's barely on the stick- have to run to the store to get some more.

I'm betting this will clear the error code. But now the question becomes- do I ask for another oil consumption test? Is that covered under warranty if it's found to be burning oil this time?

Thanks,
Kris

Yes - for test. 95% yes for warranty covered. If you go to MY.GM.com you should find that you have an extended warranty for 110K and 10 years - pretty sure.

I just created my profile there. I see these two extended coverages, but they don't explain the specifics. I'm assuming it's the "Special Coverage 14232" (see attached)?

EDIT- Sorry, missed it in the image, but there is also a "Corrosion limited warranty for another year / 100k miles.

Thanks again,

Kris

After having the timing chain repair at around 25k miles mine started eating oil at 50k miles. It flunked the oil consumption test and they replaced the pistons and rings. Sounds like yours will follow the same path, although mine never threw any error codes.

If you use the 'Search" box at the upper left of the page you could find all of this info in previous posts by entering in the codes you posted. This has been covered many times.
You may still want to search more info and find others information that will be important for you.

Here is a most recent one with ALL the codes related to this posted in two of the entries. Lot's more than just your codes, but follow is through till you see the pertinent info.

Thanks for the response. Was there supposed to be a link to a post? Sorry if I'm missing it.

Oops. . sorry. didn't get the link.

There are two very long posts in this linked thread by bigb12359 which contain the various DTC codes and recommended diagnostic work for them. Here is the link:

Re: 2012 Terrain - P0014 previously fixed, now P0010

Thanks for the help everyone. After getting the oil level back up it's been running pretty good. I also found a few pretty good YouTube videos for if I need to change out the sensor. Looks like a pretty easy job. The light has been cleared and running pretty well though.

I had my service appointment with the dealer today and we started an oil consumption test for 1000 miles. GM's standard is 1 qt / 2000 miles, correct? The dealer was pretty good about everything with having the Powertrain warranty recently expired. I brought full synthetic oil and they did the change for $20, so I can't complain about that, other than it only being 2400 miles since my last full synthetic change. What caught me was the service guy said he was able to find bulletins for the 2011 and 2013 models which covered the oil consumption extension but couldn't find anything for the 2012. This seems strange since they are all the same engine as far as I know. Any inputs on this (it was also not on My GMC)?

Time will tell what will happen, but he said he thought GM would cover part of the cost of repairs under good faith and I would be on the hook for some. But we'll see how the consumption test comes out.

Mine is a 2012 and I had the pistons and rings replaced on it for consumption. The advisor is probably. Misreading it. It would not make any sense for this to apply to 2011, 2013, but not 2012. It's the same engine.
