I was wondering what purpose the reflectors/red plastic covers have on the rear bumper. Could I smoke these real dark and they still be legal. I posted a somewhat junky shot of them.

basically you answeered your own question haha. They are there to reflect light ie park on a dark street and a car drives by and reflect there light letting them know of a vehicle. Quite pointless if you ask me. But I'm sure you could black them out with no problems. No cop is going to look at your reflectors and write you a ticket, and if they do they really need some...well I think it's quite self explanatory haha.

All vehicles are required to have rear reflectors for safety reasons. Guess you could tint them but I'm not sure why you would want to.

That is a technicality which requires explanation.

For instance...not every vehicle has a pair of separate reflectors like the NOX

They can be built into the taillamp housings for instance

But if the shape and design of said housing does not facilitate reflectors built to code...well then...

You get the Fugly NOX style...which could be equipped with bulbs to illuminate if an enterprising Modder was motivated enough

I previously had a neon. I assume the tail lights are good enough since I didn't have any reflecters on the rear bumper. I'm wondering why they put them on in the first place.

well, I don't see them as ugly in any way but we all have different tastes. How about wiring them up as rear fog lamps? Those are required in Europe and I would assume the export versions get them. (come to think of it I don't even know if they export the Nox and Terrain).

I may have come across just a tad harsh using the term "fugly"...

I just dislike non-op "stuff"...or stuff added to meet DOT requirements which might have been handled in a more tasteful fashion...

Personally I love the NOX's taillamps compared to the Terrain's...and as you correctly pointed out...taste is indeed in the eyes of the beholder

I guess my initial reply should have more clearly stated that it is not so much that I find the location or shape/size/design of them "fugly"...so much as I dislike the sole purpose they provide...

In other words...unfortunately...they are only a reflector...when they could have been more !

I honestly didn't even notice they were there until one day they caught my eye. I think I'll just leave them as is...for now at least
