I can get 24 with my V6.  Better if I drive like an elderly person.  I think I've squeezed about 28 out of my 3.0L, but it's not realistic because you just can't drive like that all the time.

Your 2.4L was advertised to get 30-32 mpg.  Try driving like an elderly person.  Elderly people get great gas mileage.  They might be clogging up the roads everywhere you go, but they're not wasting any gas per unit mile.

Elderly?   How do "elderly" people drive?  What defines. . . "elderly".  LOL

I drive according to traffic flow and type of roadway. It could be 55 to 65 or 65 to 75 MPH.

My recent log is pretty detailed and under differing * realistic * temperature and weather conditions.
I still got :

 - - about 29MPG on the trip up with good weather and 50 degree temps and  26.9MPG on the way back under much colder weather conditions.

*
 Total fuel used was 10.11 + 14.295 = 24.405 gallons.

678.8 / 24.405 = 27.814 MPG over all average under pretty  varied conditions.

For  the almost two years of owning and driving the 2015 Equinox 3.6L V6, we generally get:

Summer: 21 to 22 MPG around town. Up to 24 MPG when some freeway/highway mix.
Winter:  17 to 19 MPG city driving +20 with some highway/freeway mix.

Summer Highway/Interstate:  +28 to +30 MPG  at speeds of 60 to 75 MPH.
Winter Highway/Interstate :  +26 to +27 MPG also at speeds of 60 to 75 MPH.

In my area I generally average 22-23mpg. Heavy traffic and many long stoplights.

JT - I think that *elderly* is defined as one year older than you currently are !

Averaging 25.3 calculated over 13000 miles. Chicago area driving, probably 60 city / 40 highway driving. Best results when up shifting max of 2000 rpm, not using cruise control, and maximizing instantaneous mileage. Did average 31 mpg indicated over 450 miles once. Required dropping speed when going uphill monitoring instantaneous MPG readout.

Lifetime (75428 km) I'm @ 9.8ltr/100km or 24mpg, mostly driving around town. Best I ever got was 5.4ltr/100km or 43.55mpg on a long downhill stretch on the Coquihalla Hwy (B.C.).

I have never gotten anywhere near the highway rating of the Terrain. I have also realized that I probably do 80-90% city driving. The frustrating part is when you do spend significant time on the highway, speed and (lack of) aerodynamics kill the mileage. Here are my hand calculated results over several years:

Speeds over 70 mph really affect mileage. Sweet spot is 60 - 65 mph in my experience.

Along with * speed *, we have found that head or cross winds of over 12 to 15 MPH and driving on undulating roads with up and down  low hills will also decrease MPG by 2 to 4 MPG.

With our 2013 Terrain we get on average between 21.5 to 21.8 in town, hand calculated.  But almost all the driving is less than 8 miles, kids to and from school.  We took a trip in June of this year from southeast Arizona to North Central West Virginia, mostly interstate driving, tried to maintain the speed limit  which was between 65 and 75 but probable went over that a few times.  The trip was 4577 mile we used 175.1 gallons of gas which averaged 26.1 mpg.   The best tank was 29.7mpg and the worst was 23.2 mpg, I did notice that different brands of gas dictated some to the mpg but also the speed had a lot to do with it. Watching the the digital read out the best for 50 miles was 36.7, long down hill without touching the pedal.  It also says that overall average is 23.7 so I guess its not too bad for a little 4 banger.
