2011 SLT2

Ignore
« on: March 31, 2011, 04:21:34 AM »

My Onstar renewal is coming up at the end of April. I am still on the fence on whether or not to keep it.

The main question I have is...Does the Bluetooth and hands free calling still work if Onstar is not active?

Thanks!

YES, it does !  I suppose GM could increase their renewal rate of OnStar if they tied Bluetooth with OnStar.   Bluetooth rocks.

Bluetooth is through your stereo head unit.
OnStar is satellite com with your vehicle.
Two different systems.
OnStar is cool, but try and talk them down. It's just like the cable company, they want your business and to keep you so the will haggle with you.
Same with XM. Don't re-up right away. Let it lapse, tell them you don't want it and that it's a $ issue. They may give you a good deal now, but I can guarantee they'll hook you up down the road if you drop them. I was getting letters for 5 months for $20 at one time. That's crazy!
Also, check with your insurance agent, you may get a discount for OnStar.

Thanks for the replies! That was my biggest concern, but it does make sense that the phone is actually paired with the radio...duh. I guess I was thinking it was through Onstar because the steering wheel controls can be used for both.

As far as renewal, I think I have gotten two letters so far. The funny thing is that each one says "this is the last letter you will receive from us"...yeah, right. I will see what kind of deal I can get with them.

One other consideration for keeping On* might be the My Chevy app

May influence renewal consideration...or not.
yeah it's a toy...
but since the app and it's use is "free" (with your paid service  Tongue )

You can get OnStar FREE for 6 months just by pushing the button and asking for it. You will also get entered into a car giveaway contest.

This is only good for people who's OnStar has expired and is in effect until May 31st.

OK, what is the catch ?  Will they automatically renew you after the 6 months is up ?  Or are they trying to get you dependent on it so you "can't do without it" ?

THX for the info.  Again, great to have someone from the "inside" on the board.  BTW - What happened to Tricia - did we burn her out with problems?

Renewal is not automatic, but they do ask for your credit card number. I did this on my Malibu 3 days ago. They will also offer you 60 minutes of OnStar phone for $4.95. They are suppose to contact me 30 days prior to the expiration of the free 6 months. I have already set an alert on my phone, to notify me after 5 months.

There will be Ten (10) Grand Prizes: Winnersí choice of only one Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle, the
estimated VRV of each prize vehicle not to exceed $131,681USD/$130,937CAD.

If you currently have onstar you can still enter the giveaway by pushing the onstar button.

I entered the contest too. What GM vehicle costs $131K??  Shocked I like the Tahoe Hybrid 4x4 but then my tastes can be somewhat pedestrian. I love the Suburban too but I wish it had a diesel engine option like the old days.

I entered the contest as well, but does that automatically give me the 6 month trial? I am on my 3 month trial right now. I guess I could just ask them, either way I don't want them to have my CC info.

The only time I have ever used the Onstar was to enter the contest. Cheesy

While it's true you don't need to subscribe to On* for the BT to work, I remember reading somewhere else in this forum that the BT hardware is in both the stereo head unit and the On* VCIM unit.  So if you're a paranoid type, disconnecting the VCIM could disable BT.  Just a thought.

Bluetooth works exactly the same with or without OnStar. Infact if you don't have any OnStar phone min's there is one less step in making a bluetooth call.

Wasn't referring to the service.  Was referring to the On* unit in the car.  Some people don't like having the thing connected because they fear Big Brother is watching their every move or something.

If "big brother" wants to watch me have at it--------------not much to watch unless going back and forth to Wal-Mart and Sam's is on the covert activity list!!!!!
