Got this letter in the mail yesterday.  My father has a 2011 Nox and got this letter yesterday as well.  Looks like GM is owning up to the engine problem.

--------------------
As the owner of a 2010 model year Chevrolet Equinox, your satisfaction with our product  is very important to us.

This letter is intended  to make  you  aware that  on some  2010 model  year Chevrolet  Equinox  vehicles, equipped  with a 2.4L engine, the chrome  layer on the balance chain pins may wear, allowing the chain to stretch.   This  would  cause  an engine  noise,  and  if left untreated,  could  cause  the chain  to  break  and leading to engine damage.

In addition,  the fuel pump  plunger  shaft seal may wear and allow fuel to leak into the crankcase,  which would  illuminate the Malfunction  Indicator  Light.   This can cause engine run-on  and/or the engine to run rough.

Do not take your vehicle to your General Motors dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.

General Motors  is providing  owners  with additional  protection  for the condition  described above.   If this condition  occurs  on your  2010 model  year Chevrolet  Equinox,  equipped  with a 2.4L engine,  within 10 years of the date your  vehicle  was originally  placed  in service  or 193,000 kilometres,  whichever  occurs first, the condition  will be repaired for you at no charge.  Diagnosis  or repair for conditions  other than the condition  described  above is not covered under this special coverage program.

Repairs and adjustments  qualifying under this special coverage  must be performed  by a General Motors dealer.  You may want to call the service department  at your dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment  at a time that is convenient  for you.  This will also  allow  your  dealer  to  order  parts  if they  are not  already  in stock.   Keep this letter  with your  other important glovebox  literature for future reference.

If you have already paid to have this special coverage condition corrected and you have not received reimbursement under  a Vehicle Service Contract,  you should  contact  your dealer as you may be eligible to  receive  reimbursement.    Please  provide  your  dealer  with  the  original  or  clear  copy  of  all receipts, invoices  and/or  repair  orders  verifying  the  repair,  the  amount  charged,  proof  of payment,  the  date  of payment  of those charges,  and proof  of ownership  of the vehicle at the time of the repair.  Your request for reimbursement, including  the information  and documents  mentioned  above, must be received by your dealer before July 31, 2014.

We are sorry for any inconvenience you may experience; however we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction  with our products.

Well I had my fuel pump replaced a few months ago because it was leaking into the engine and causing run on or a non-cranking issue. I've had the noise here and there. Do Terrain owners get the letter also?

Wow. This is where the foreign brands fall behind. It's one thing to have reliable products, but it means a lot more for a company to stand behind their products. Give yourself a pat on the back GM, job well done.

Being that this letter is being sent out in 2013 for a 2010-2011 vehicle there is no way to know if the chrome layer is wearing off or not without a delaer actually examining the vehicle. My questions is how do owners know if this isnt occuring within their vehicle without it being examined? I say that because the 2.4 is already a noisy engine due to being direct injection. After having my transmission rebuilt recently, its even noisier. I think that the letter merely suggesting that IF you hear a noise or suspect something may be wrong is not enough. Some folks dont know one noise from another. Just my 2 cents.

I received the letter yesterday. I'm very glad to see GM standing behind their product, but I also think the letter is a little vague. Our Terrain does sometimes but rarely have start up noise and I've reported it to the dealer. I wonder how the dealers are going to treat this letter for Terrains that sometimes are noisy but the noise can't be verified on demand. It would have been nice if the letter would have given more information regarding the type of sound that occurs from the chrome layer wear and under what conditions.

However, it's great that GM is offering the service for 10 years or 120,000 miles from date of service. So, I guess I'll just wait until something more obvious occurs before discussing it with the dealer.

Yeah. Believe it or not. One day it was fine. One day it decided it didn't want to take me anywhere. No warning or anything. The wave plate broke and shredded the trans. They had to replace it, the torque converter, housing and "re-condition" the entire thing. It's very noisy under load in second gear now. Has kind of turned me off to GM with as many problems this car has given me. I'm right around 94 K but I do a lot of traveling but I don't drive the shyt out of it.

I also received, this letter, and my transmission was also rebuilt @ 30 000 kms. The only thing they replaced concerning this letter was the fuel pump, I was also wondering at which point or situation would the balancing chain be checked or replaced.  They Said it would be covered up to 193000 kms

I received this letter today. It's a little disturbing but at least GM is doing the right thing.
It's probably one of the reasons behind the oil monitor computer update for the 2.4L.
The update decreases the time between oil changes, better safe than sorry.
I'll keep the letter in a safe place and not the glovebox as suggested. Angry

Got mine late last week. So my 2010 I4 is now good for 10 years  thumbs up. Was at my dealer yesterday and asked him about it. He confirmed it covers everything touching oil. No doubt it will protect the resale value of the 2010s since I would imagine nobody would touch a used Nox/Terrain that will blow up in your face. He did reiterate to make sure NEVER to pass 10k km per oil change, no matter what the OLM says. 8,000 km would ceiling would be a SAFER one. Considering most generic non-OEM filters dictate a 8000 km max on the filters.

Thanks for the heads-up but I looked mine up yesterday and it apparently was not one of the models...yeah Banana  I said apparently because then I received the letter today via snail mail.  thumbdown  Not sure why the discrepancy.  So now the magic question, the letter states "Do NOT take your vehicle to your GMC dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition described above".  That statement above says  "...this would cause an engine noise, and if left untreated, could cause the chain to break, leading to engine damage".  I occasionally, albeit rarely, have a noise that sounds like it's a diesel engine.....is that the noise?  Or is it the noise that sounds like a Mix-Master that happens always?  What noise am I looking (listening) for?   Bang Head

This letter from GM that says crankcase oil dilution with gasoline is caused by a faulty shaft and seal. Perhaps this will reduce the frequency of hearing the old wive's tale about how GDI engines inherently pass gasoline from the combustion chamber to the crankcase Bang Head

Mine is in the shop right now having this exact problem repaired. The noise it made was very distinctive. If you are hearing an odd noise and have any suspicion at all that this problem is developing take it to your GMC dealer immediately and let their technicians listen to it. They will be able to tell from the noise it is making.

Your dealer representative confirmed that the special extended warranty covered everything touching oil:  The letter I received only included two components.
If you read the letter carefully:  The only extended warranty offered is for the two conditions described in the letter (balance shaft chain & high pressure fuel pump):  "Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not covered under this special coverage program".

How about the other components listed in the TechLink post such as the updated balance chain tensioner, timing chain kit, and updated piston ring kit and new pistons?  Suppose that the fuel pump has been leaking raw fuel into the crankcase, contaminating the engine oil, and because of this, various other oil lubricated components have been compromised because of insufficient lubrication; these also aren't included. The letter specifically states these other related items are not included.
The special warranty coverage letter should state that all affected oil lubricated internal engine components would be covered.

I hope that what your dealer told you would be the policy, but that is not what the letter that I received stated!

The only problem I will probably have is if I'll have enough miles on my 2011 for the problem to show up before the warranty extension runs out. I called my service manager to find out what kind of a noise I should be listening for, at what mileage does the problem usually show up at, and had they did many Equinoxes so far. He said it would be a clicking noise any tine the engine was running, it usually happens at around 60 or 70 thousand miles, and that they had done about a dozen vehicles so far. That's where my problem may come in, I will have owed my Equinox for three years in December and only have about 19,900 miles on it right now.

So, 8-10 years from now, you may, or may not have a problem with your engine.  Personally, I wouldn't let it keep you up at night.  By then, we'll have personal transporters to beam us from place to place.  LOL

Got the letter yesterday as well. The wife is in the low 20K area. However, it sounds like a chainsaw at start up at times and the oil smells of fuel. Plus, for the first time, it was one quart low when I changed the oil last time. It looks like we actually meet the criteria of the letter.

I will say that it is nice that GM is stepping to the plate again.

We received our letter a few days ago. Unfortunately we had taken ours in multiple times to the dealer to have it looked at for these exact issues and every time they would simply say that they could not duplicate any issues and that there was nothing wrong, even though every time I would bring it in the check engine light was on. We ended up trading ours in 4 months ago after I got fed up with getting no service from the dealer. I wish they had sent these out earlier as I loved the Equinox but couldn't deal with the reliability issues any longer.

Have to wonder why they would fool around with a rebuild when a long block engine in the crate would cost less.

Your guess is good as mine. Its not having the issues it was having but the engine seems underpowered now, like more than it was. And it makes this high pitch whine that syncs with the speed of the vehicle. Im just monitoring it for now.

Can anyone tell me what I should be on the lookout for with this whole timing chain issue?  I had the startup rattle and know exactly what that's like but no idea what I should have an eye out for with the whole timing chain thing.

So far I had the start up rattle which seems to be fixed, stalling issue which seems to have been fixed, hard shift which seems to have been fixed and torque converter seal which was leaking fixed.  Those were all pretty straight forward.  It was obvious something was wrong.  With this I have no idea except for after the chain breaks it nearly grenades the engine.

while there is no specific noise I can tell you that yours is most likely making it. When I got my engine work done I could barely tell the car was running from 5 feet away.
